Trilinear MipMap Interpolation
advantages
- simple
- easy to implement in hardware (straightforward addressing)
disadvantages
- square (or rectangular, with RIPs) approximation
- poor weighting of filter (and dependence of aggregate filter on MipMap generation filter)
- extremely poor off-angle quality
- over-blurs (errs toward oversampling)
conclusion
- was a very good idea 15 years ago
- still well-suited to hardware implementation
- good “baseline” texture filter - everyone has it now
- needs improvement
